Feeling sew uninspired.

Wednesday, 2 December 2009
I finally got a chance to sew the other night, uninterrupted and what did I do? I sat at my table with various lengths of fabric around me and patterns strewn all over hoping that somehow it would all inspire me to start some projects.

I was hoping to make up some Christmas dresses for my girls in the same style as the Miss Lily. Seeing as though I don't have that pattern I was working with several I have, trying to mesh them together.

Next was choosing the right material for the job. This is where I made my first mistake. The two I chose for the top half are just too busy to compliment each other. Sure, they contain some of the same colours, but two floral prints together - Nuh uh!!!!

Despite the fact that this is only half finished and I have yet to do a rolled hem on the arm and neck and then some rows of shirring as well to bring it all in, I am really disliking the combo. In fact I think I will chop the sleeves off and redo them in a block colour.

Then I made the same top (half) up in some various purple fabric I have stashed here.

Again, I equally dislike this one as much as the other one.

I think I have outgrown my fabric. No I don't mean I have gotten fat ha ha! ( well I have, but that's another story) but I think my taste has grown up a little and I've been introduced to the most gorgeous fabric courtesy of Crafty Mamas and so now when I look at my El cheapo stash of fabric from places like spotty, it drains me of all my creative juices!

I used to buy a lot of fabric at Spotlight when it was on sale when my eldest daughter was a wee babe ( that's when and why I first started to sew- 8 years ago). It was good to practice on, but I can't of done too much because there is still so much of it left.
I guess my girls still need play clothes right?

They definitely need shorts, that's for sure. I have not finished any yet, what's left to do I need the sewing machine for, not the OL, so it will have to wait until I have free table space.
Here is a pair in the same fabric as the first peasant top.
It's my own variation on Simplicity 9209 (peasant tops are from same pattern), I've added cuffs and taken out the drawstring waist, using a plain elasticised waist instead ( they are only play clothes after all)

(they will get run over by an iron when they are completed)

By this stage of the night I was starting to get back into the swing of things and after rummaging through my container of good fabric, found this gorgeous piece to make the next pair of shorts out of and still have enough left over to make August a skirt .

ok so it is unfinished (but not for long).
I teamed it with a lovely orange plain and polka dot fat quarter. I've added a double pocket to the left hand side at the front, purposely off centre in an attempt to make it a bit funky. I've yet to sew up the side seams as I am adding cuffs to these as well in the same orange material as the smallest pocket and I'll also add some belt loops in the same colour too. Finished off with an elasticised waist and a long sash in the angie pants material to hide the waistband.

You'll have to stay tuned for the finished, modelled pictures.

Now just because I can and also for the fact its been so long since I updated my blog with any of Master E's milestones, look at what my monkey is doing now ( and see how Fletcher smiles for the camera now)

Pulling himself up to a standing position on anything he can! He surprised me the other day by walking along pushing a washing basket in front of himself for support.
Elliott will be 10 months old in a week, my how this time with my last wee babe has flown.

Ali, isn't it the most frustrating thing, it happens to me all the time, too many different things I want to make and I end up getting all confused and flustered! You will get there, I find doing a bit of blog surfing helps to get the inspiration juices flowing again.
Aww and look at your little man, what a cutie! Sam is doing the furniture cruise too now, so cute xo

I agree with you about the tops, but I am loving your shorts!

Spotlight have some really nice cottons in at the moment, they look a little more modern which I like.

How adorable is Elliot! Standing and walking along already. Too cute!

Well, you're just going to have to sew more shorts to use up all that stash to clear it out for some new purchases :)

Look at your little bubba go! He's going to be off and running in no time at all (and yes, the time goes all too quickly, especially when you know it's your last). LOL at Fletcher's 'camera face'!

I have some interesting combo's happen too.
With your uninspiring stash, maybe you should sell it off on ebay? there is no point hanging on to it if it is stopping you from sewing. Or at least just keep using your good fabric, those shorts are gorgeous!

I hate that, nearly finished project and you are over it. You have made me think about some of my unfinished projects and I realise- there are some I just don't like and don't want to spend my time on. But, I need the balance of discipline and seeing things through.
I love the shorts, they will be great.
